Our strategy is to get the whole community taking the initiative to do something. To make this happen, we have set up a network of project groups to make contact with many different sectors of the local population.

The community We are talking to a wide range of community, resident and neighbourhood groups to encourage ideas and participation.

Liaison with the council We are working to promote litter as a priority, for example obtaining more litter bins, improved enforcement measures and the inclusion of cleanliness issues in planning and licensing.

Commercial We are developing partnerships with a view to encouraging businesses and traders to ‘adopt’ frontages and verges and provide litter bins, as well as providing advice on secure waste storag.

Pubs and clubs We are consulting with landlords and trade groups and developing initiatives to tackle priority issues, eg to encourage publicans to ‘adopt’ frontages and specific measures to target the problems arising out of night time drinking and clubbing.

Tourism & events We are working in partnership with the tourist office and tourist venues to encourage positive behaviour from visitors to the town as well as best practice at public events. We are also helping by providing post-event litter clearing equipment.

Education We are targeting all educational establishments from nursery schools and state and private schools through to colleges and the university with a range of measures including road shows, student union involvement and awards for good performance.
